Homonym comes from two Greek words meaning 'the same' and 'name'. A homonym is a word which has the same sound as another, but which has a different meaning. This domino type game will introduce students to the most common homonyms and give vocabulary practice.

Makes 24 Dominoes. For best results print on tagboard and laminate for durability.

To Play:

  • Share dominoes equally among players.
  • Players take turns to put down a domino matching a word with another word which sounds the same, but has a different meaning (Homonym).
  • The first player to put down all their dominoes or who has the least number left, is the winner.

Extended Lesson:

  • Get students to look up and compare the definition of each homonym in a dictionary.
  • Ask students to say a sentence using both homonyms. Eg, The bottle of scent cost me a cent.
